his
book: "The Martial Arts" has been
translated from French to English. It was
printed in English for the first time in 1977 (on Octopus Books
Ltd.).
|
This
magnificent book shows the various Japanese
martial arts/ways and martial traditions
from the ancient times and up into our modern days
(and modern ways). The author, Michel Random,
presents the concepts of bugei and
budo, the old Japanese shinto religion, the
presence of nature, Japanese calligraphy,
and many other sides to the Japanese culture
- things ralated to the martial arts in
one way or another. For instance, it is
common to believe that the zen-budhism
is the basis of most of the martial arts.
It is indeed true for budo - the
martial ways. As for bugei/bujutsu
- the older warrior arts - the basis is
in shinto.

The
reader will enjoy a host of marvellous images
throughout the book. Really well taken and
presented! The book is obviously written
by someone with a solid knowledge and deep respect
for these arts, as well as a keen understanding
of the impact they have had on the Japanese
culture and society. If you are into Japanese martial
arts, this is a book that will give you
hours of inspiration and pure joy. Visually
it may be the best one there is.
|
The
author gives insights to a great number
of topics that will increase your knowledge
about the Japanese mindset. Needless to
say, you will understand the basis of our
arts to a greater extent also. Do make sure
that you get a chance to view this book!
