his
book
"Jiu-Jutsu or Jiu-Do, selection from
Kodokwan method"
is penned by one K. Yamanaka in the year 1918.
|
The
content is basically modern judo, but do
also include some of the old-school jiu-do/judo
(in other words ju jitsu) techniques. The
latter being things like ankle-locks,
leg-locks and knee-locks. In addition to
all this there is a good chapter on atemi
(punces and kicks) towards the end of
the book.
|
As
such this book clearly show the "last
remains" of ju jitsu in the Kodokan
system (here spelled Kodokwan), before the
modern judo was finally set with the newaza, randori, kata, gokyo
(five different series of throwing techniques)
and the other things people are taught in
todays judo.
|
In
this period of transition, from which the
book originates, it was not uncommon to
use the term jiu-do (as you will see is written
on the cover of the book). This term was
by no mean something invented by the Kodokan
or by Jigoro Kano himself. You can read
a lot of the background and facts relating
ju jitsu and Kodokan in this book (click
here).
|
The
book begins with a description of the older
ju jitsu and the building of the Kodokan
(Kodokwan) judo. Amongst other things it
is stated that the belt/rank system
as we know it today indeed was invented
by Jigoro Kano. Prior to this in Japan they
had the system that was known as menkyo (a
strict form of
lisenses).
|
After
this introduction the author explains the
competition system in judo, then the basic
methods such as breakfalls, grips and
movement, before taking a look at a number
of the various throws: ukiotoshi, seoi-nage, kataguruma aso.
There is a chapter on different methods
used in free sparring (randori).
And last, but not least you have the two
mentioned chapters on locks and atemi.
All methods and techniques are described
in detail. Those of you mainly interested
in pictures or drawings should look elsewhere!
|
This
is a very interesting book, one that should
be equally informative whether you do judo
or ju jitsu. Also for the serious budoka
not into one of the two arts, this
should be a great source of information.
