r.
Barry Philipp has written this magnificent book: "The Fear Factor - The Core
of A Desperate Society". Here it is
shown as an e-book, but it is still possible
to get it as a regular (paper) book
also (I don't understand why you want that
though when you see the price on the e-book...).
The regular book was printed in 1999 originally.

This
is not a "hype" or "Ten-Easy-Ways-to-Get-Rid-of-Fear"
kind of book! It is based on solid studies, research,
science and knowledge. It shows, in
great length and detail how the brain process
fear. This is the basis of understanding
violence and many (maybe even all) social
and emotional problems in society. Now that
is a tough claim if I ever saw one! But
it is really hard to disagree, and you will
be so much wiser on a lot of topics concerning
stress, anger, fear, violence and more
after reading this book. Maybe you won't
agree on each little detail and every piece
of theory, and perhaps you will only
skim through some of the chapters, but
that is ok. It is a huge book, more
than 400 pages long, and it contains a lot
of information.

For our
purposes I suppose that the best parts
is understanding what triggers violence,
and knowing the violent mind. This
includes anger, frustration and aggression
- in others as well as in ourselves. The
end result is, hopefully, that we can deal
with destructive emotions, thoughts and
actions in a more constructive manner,
and thus reduce the occurrances of
violence. The author says: "Regardless
of a person’s level of intelligence, if he cannot control his fear - it will
control him! Since time immemorial, fear has tormented individuals, destroyed
families, terrorized communities, corrupted governments and caused global
conflicts. However, acknowledgement of this fact arms people everywhere with
the freedom to begin an educational process that erodes the pedestal of fear. If we choose to remain ignorant of the
fear of our past, then we are doomed to be controlled by that legacy."

Philipp
is investigating the topic to a great length.
He discusses whether violence is taught
or not, and how affects us from an early
age. He views the different ways that violence
is expressed, brings up the topic of rascism
and much more. Further he uses many known
criminals and despots (Like Hitler) as
a means to shed light on the topic. Finally,
and maybe most importantly, he offers suggestions
on how we can reduce the level of fear in
our life.

This
is a highly useful, informative and
thought-provoking book. In short: one of
the better books I have ever read on the
subject (maybe the best). I urge you to
go and get it - the sooner the better! It
comes with a surprisingly modest tag, US$
14.95, that is very, very cheap to say the
least. Do
get it here - this is something you
will not regret!
